Review: E.L.F. Under Eye Concealer & Highlighter

Another day, another concealer. I've been getting rather frustrated with my concealers lately (why won't you cover!), so when I spotted the E.L.F. Under Eye Concealer & Highlighter, I figured... why not.

Of course, my apprehension comes in the form of, is fair really fair or is this fair two shades darker than my skin tone. Luckily, it just appears darker in the tube than how it really is in real life (yay!). So, fair is actually fair.

Anyway, review time!

Packaging: Comes in the standard black box as all of e.l.f.'s Professional Studio line comes in. The actual tube itself is a duel tube. One side (left) being the concealer and the other side (right) being the Highlight. Connected to the center piece are two doe foot applicators. The tube that contain the product are both frosted, so the concealer may appear slightly darker than it really is.

Color Selection: For the concealer, e.l.f. offers only three selections. Fair, Light and Medium. Perhaps in the future e.l.f. will release more color selections, I don't know off hand. All three come with the same highlighter color which is called Glow.

Concealer/Highlighter blended out
Texture/Formula: First off both are rather liquid-y. Not runny or anything, but they definitely aren't a cream. They both have a silky texture. The issue is, especially with the concealer, is that it's on the sheer side. The highlighter DOES contain shimmer. It doesn't show up with the semi-blend out above, but it definitely is there. Both are very, very light weight when under the eyes.

Application:
  • Use the "conceal" side under the eye area to disguise under eye bags and help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness while helping the skin around the eyes look firmer and rejuvenated.
  • The "highlight" cream gives eyes an instant brightening boost with light-reflecting pigments that work like an instant eye lift (can also be used as an eyeshadow base).
  • Dot the formula and blend in under, around and ontop of the eye as needed for a youthful glow.

Overall Verdict: I'm semi-disappointed with the concealer. First off, it's on the sheer side, so when it's blended in under the eye, I can still see the darkened area. This concealer I actually think it's a concealer you'd have to TRY and build up to get a decent coverage. I do like the fact that the fair, is in fact, fair, but the consistency given, the concealing power just isn't there. I will say this though, this concealer would work better if you don't have dark under eye circles, or if you don't have any at all. It does feel hydrating and doesn't appear to dry out the under eye area.

Pairing the concealer with the highlighter does help, but slightly. Because there is a shimmer to it, the shimmer reflects the light, it doesn't last though. I did notice though, when you put Glow over the concealer, it can break down the concealer and make the darkness come through more. So, I wouldn't apply Glow directly after the concealer, wait a little then apply it. Or, I'd even go as far as mixing both Glow and the Concealer together on the back of your hand, then applying it under your eyes with either your ring finger or a brush.

  1. My hunt for the perfect concealer always leads me to products that are nice in the tube, but are just too sheer to cover my dark circles. I have sad Panda face. :P I've found that using a shimmery powder eyeshadow works better as a highlighter, since the liquids seem to wear away my concealer too quickly.

    Great review!!

    1. Thank you!

It drives me up a wall when I think I find a concealer that seems to be wonderful based on reviews and in the tube, then it's too sheer, ugh! :x I actually just purchased Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer... I'm putting it to the test tomorrow haha. It's super thick, I actually went into panic mode at Sephora cause I put too much on the back of my hand and it was just... there. I was trying to rub it in like lotion. Eep!

Salmon is suppose to cancel out the blues for the dark circles, has little ol' me tried that yet? No :x
